A Quiet Day

Easter Saturday 19 April 2014

Another chilling out day. Yes, there is a lot I could be doing. Quite frankly though, I'm pretty tired.
It's been a busy time since June last year when Pa had his strokes and moved in 9 months ago.

There hasn't really been a chance to take a break. There are the two dogs we dog sit, plus Pa.
In the New Year when we usually go away we weren't able to, in part due to Boar's hand. Also due to the resposibilities here though.

That's life and this is the season of caring for elderly parents. A good season albeit with it's storms.

Today I've continued to update this blog. We did go down to the shops to get a few groceries and also some Easter eggs for people.

We called in to Shampoo Plus to show Frosty the photos of wee Lil Battler. She commented on how blue he was. I said, yes, there were a few minutes when they were encouraging him to keep breathing. A bit scary!

Boar cooked dinner again. A simple dinner of fried tomatoes, fried eggs, baked beans and toast.

Wonder how Brains and Locket are faring? I know everything is well unless I hear otherwise.

Ok, finally this is updated. I'm now going to do something other than blog!

Night for now!

Good Friday, 18 April 2014

Just chilling :)

I think this is the first Easter in 27 years that we haven't had any of the children at home!
It was strange to be elsewhere and not able to kiss and hug my two youngest before they left for camp. They were probably relieved :)

My younger brother, Perry, arrived here at about 5.30 in the morning. He'd come down on the overnight bus. Boar had offered to go and pick him up. Perry walked from the bus stop in Johnsonville. So no need to. He walks a lot in Auckland so this would have been a stroll for him.

I dozed off again which surprised me as they were talking quite loudly. When I fully woke I wandered out. Had good intentions of going to the Good Friday Service.

One little problem. By the time I found out when it started, 9am, it was about. . .8.50am! I was still feeling quite tired so just flagged it.

I spent the rest of the day being a real lazybones. I was productive though. I managed to almost catch this blog up. No mean feat that!

I'm going to start keeping running notes in a file on the computer. That way I can copy and paste. Might make it a bit easier.

I text Chuckles to find out how things were going. They were going well. They'd both had a good night. When the two boys met Halfpint sat next to Lil Battler, smiled, waved and whispered hello. So sweet :)

They ended up going home later that day. The Maternity Unit gave them some Milton tablets and formula as the shops were closed.

I looked through the papers that had come from HSNZ. Had to chuckle when I saw the code there. And instructions on how to order. Also to keep it below NZ$399 inc. freight. Also that I can do it all from HSNZ site.

Oh, well, I know now! Won't make the same mistake twice. And will have to pay, literally, for being impetuous.

Tomorrow I'll search to see what books I can find. Some we have, some we don't.

Boar organised some dinner. Even though there are no children here there are still two other adults who need feeding!

I continued blogging after dinner whilst half pie watching a movie. I kept going till around 1am when my eyes were beginning to close.

The photos below were taken on 19 Feb this year. Just to show how the weather can change in a matter of hours. This photo was taken before 8am. We can usually see right across the valley. This photo looks across the road.

This photo looks south towards the city.

The next one I thought was pretty cool, I took it as the sun was trying to shine through the cloud. It was taken about 10 minutes after the last two.

This last one was taken around 11am, 3 hours later. This is roughly the same angle as the first photo.
It is also what we can usually see! Except when the mist rolls in.

That's it for this post.

Expect the Unexpected

Thursday 17 April

I slept! I actually slept!
I'm not great at sleeping away from home.
The bed was very comfy though.
Lots of covers and Callista had shown me where there were more.

My phone hadn't rung all night.
I probably got around 3hrs total sleep on and off.
Heard some noises after I'd gone to bed and when I got up to the loo round 1am discovered Callista was doing some work on the computer in their office.
Since having the artificial valve put in her heart she can hear her heart beating in her ears.
All the time. More loudly when it's quiet.
So she has the TV on low when she sleeps.
She'd decided to do some work as she was not sleepy and could hear her heart.

I woke again around 6.30am so got up then.
We were able to go to the hospital any time.
Decided to have breakfast first.
Went to see if Butcher was awake and he was.

By 7am all four kids were up.
Hana, 6yrs; Caia, 5yrs; Akiva, 4yrs; Uriah, 2yrs.
3girls and one wee lad.
Makes for busy days.

I rang the hospital and got through to the Maternity Unit.
Chuckles had slept most of the night.
I asked them to let her know we'd be down soon.
Knowing hospitals I knew not much would be decided before 8am.
Unless there was an urgent reason.

Had some yummy toast.
Discovered it was "Sausage Sizzle Day" at Hana and Caia's school.
$1 in their spare change bag.
I had some small change.
Each sausage was $2 and luckily I had enough spare change to make up the difference.

Found out why Kato gets up at 2am six days a week.
He's delivering the Wairarapa Times Age six mornings a week.
Some income as he hasn't sold any houses yet.

Callista is doing a Business Management course.
She attends night classes once a week.
It is a year long course.

Breakfast eaten, hugs goodbye in case I wasn't back.

Off to the Maternity Unit again.
Obstetrician came in.
He had a lovely manner I thought.
You felt confident that he knew his work well.
He was an older doctor, probably in his mid sixties.

The decision was made to examine again around 10am.
That was done and more prostin needed.
Last dose though.
All this time Chuckles had been having "prostin pains"
Looked like mild contractions to me.
But not really regular enough to kick into labour.

Chuckles had a shower after she came off the monitor.
Helped with the pains a bit.
The prostin seemed to be still helping things to change.
Then all of a sudden around 1pm things changed.

The decision was made to move Chuckles through to Delivery.
Once there she could have some Nitrous Oxide or laughing gas.
With Halfpint she didn't like it.
We encouraged her to try it and this time she found it effective.

During the morning I'd been in contact with Brains.
Jester was busy and not able to take Brains and Locket to the church.
That was the meeting place for camp.
I called Sophia and left a message.
Around 1pm Sophia called me back and said she'd be delighted to help.
She thanked me for asking her to help!

Around 2.20pm it was all on with the labour.

At 4pm Chuckles gave birth to a baby boy.
He took a few minutes to pink up.
He was 2725g/6lbs
A fast and furious labour when she got going.

Welcome to the family Lil Battler
Love you heaps already :)
Your mummy and daddy are pleased you're here safely :)
So are we all.

I was lucky enough to be the one to dress Lil Battler.
Chuckles had a good selection of warm clothes for him.

Around 6.30pm Butcher headed to Featherston to pick up Halfpint.
They decided it would be best to just take Halfpint home for the night.
Sleep in his own home and meet his wee brother in the morning.

I headed off soon after.
Once I knew Chuckles was ok and settled.

Went to Callista and Kato's and had some dinner.
I was feeling pretty tired after only 3hrs sleep.
Births are pretty intense as well.
Once again I'd been asked why I wasn't a midwife!
They all seem to think I'd make a good one.

After some food and a cuppa, and chat of course, I was ready to head off.
Before I left Callista gave me chocolate. . .to keep me awake!
I said I wouldn't text and wake her. . .but she insisted I did so that they would know I was home safely.

The drive home was not too much fun.
Wet, surface flooding.
Light glaring & reflecting off the road.
Hard to see when I had to turn the high beams off.
On the open road I hardly got above 80k.

The Rimutaka Hill Road was open.
There was a sign saying there were slips and to take extra care.
So I crawled like the nana I am over the hill!
Don't thnk I went much above 40k.
Not too much traffic.
Very black when high beams were off.
Made it safely despite a few big rocks.

Was very glad when I had parked in the driveway!

I came inside to find that there was a package from HSNZ
It had obviously been left sticking out of the letterbox.
And was quite damp.
Before I went to bed I separated out all the pages.
Left wet they would stick together.

I also remembered to text Callista.
Then I sought my bed.
I tried to read but put the book down fairly soon as my eyes were closing.
Sleep, sweet sleep, soon descended.

A Whole Seven Weeks! Part 5

Monday 14 April - Wednesday 16 April

Monday 14 April
We were all a bit tired after the weekend.
I had some computer stuff to catch up with.
Towards the end of March we'd made the decision to go with A.C.E
We also decided to affiliate with Home Schooling NZ
I'd paid the registration and received some information.
I'd also completed and returned the two Parent Training Modules or PACEs.
Sent in the paperwork I needed to.
Principal Todd had spoken with me again.
He told me I was refreshing to talk to!

I'd received the email with Brains' and Locket's PACE levels to start at.
I'd spent time figuring out the different PACEs in the Scope & Sequence.

This morning I'd put on my business hat.
My L Dance Studio Business Manager hat.
It was time for the term fee accounts to be done.
I also draughted an email and newsletter.
It took a few hours to get through what I needed to.
Miss Lisa got in contact and said if Brains' leg wasn't great to skip dance for him.
He has RAD Advanced One coming up later in the year and she didn't want his leg made worse.
After speaking to Brains I made an appointment for him to see a physio.
Couldn't get an appointment for Monday but could for Tuesday morning.

Suddenly I realised it was 12.25pm!
And that it was Monday!
And that Locket was supposed to go to choir on Mondays!
She would usually be up before this.
However she'd been chatting to me till the wee hrs the night before.
She was SO excited about the comp results.
I went upstairs. . .and she was still asleep!
I woke her and mentioned choir, she just shook her head.
Too tired.
She hasn't been enjoying it the last few weeks.
Has decided she won't continue next term.
I'm happy with her decision.
Locket did as I asked and went for a term before deciding.
I don't think you can make a decision based on one class unless you intensely dislike what you are trying.

I went back to finishing what I needed to after waking Locket.
Brains was a sleepy head too.
Soon they'll have to be up and working so I don't mind if they sleep in now.

Miss Lisa moved Locket's class time forward as Brains wasn't dancing.
It is viewing week this week.
I got food organised for dinner so that I could stay and watch.
I took my laptop with me.
While I was watching I downloaded the Product Catalogue for A.C.E
I'd emailed and asked for the code I needed to download the order forms.
Then I realised I needed a Credit Card Authority form as well.
Forwarded the same email with a bit added!

Locket did well in her classes.

Tuesday 15 April
Moneypenny has had some itchy spots.
She'd made an appointment to get them checked.
I headed over to pick her and the girls up by 8.40am.
Appointment was at 9am
We made it on time.
Poppet, now 5 months old, had fallen asleep.
So I stayed in the van with the girls.
Climbed in the back with Sunshine and spent the time amusing them with balloons.
Amazing how the simplest things will keep wee ones entertained.
Poppet woke up after around 10-15minutes.
I managed to keep her entertained as well!

I noticed a patch of skin on Sunshine's face.
I queried with Moneypenny what it was.
She didn't know. It had just appeared.
Hmmm. . .looked suspisciously like ringworm to me.
I suggested Moneypenny pick up a cream from the chemist.
Moneypenny was a bit horrified but I assured her lots of kids get ringworm.
Several of mine did!

My mobile rang and Moneypenny took the call.
It was Chuckles.
Her midwife wanted her to have another scan.
Just as a check up.

After I dropped Moneypenny and the girls off I came home to pick up Brains.
His physio appointment was at 11.10am at Te Aro Physio
I have found them so good for injuries related to dance.
They were suggested to me a few years ago.
Both Brains and Locket have been treated there.
Managed to find a park not too far away.
The parking building next to Reading Courtenay has been closed since July.
It's the closest parking to the physio.

The good news was that Brains' injury wasn't too bad.
Kieran, the physio, wanted Brains to keep dancing.
Kieran asked Brains about his future plans for dance.

For the first time in years I heard Brains say he "might" go on to a dance school like
I managed not to whoop, holler or screech with excitement!
Why? Because when he was 5 years old I asked Brains if he wanted to do dancing the next year.
To my surprise he answered "Yes! and the next year and the next and the next til I'm a professional dancer!"
I decided I need to listen to such a definite answer.
Most little boys say fireman, policeman, truck driver etc.
Not dancer.
I didn't even know that he knew there was such a thing as a professional dancer!
Then quite a few years ago he went off the whole idea.
So, for me, this was big news.
BUT it is only a "might" as he firmly told me later.

So if any family are reading this. . .don't pressure the lad.
He's not auditioning yet!

I rang Chuckles when we got home.
She had been seen by an Obstetrician and he had decided to admit her.
Bubs didn't appear to have grown.
The most likely scenario was to try and induce her the next day.
Butcher and Halfpint stayed the night at a friends in Masterton to save going back to Feaherston.

I got busy and checked my emails.
Fantastic! A reply from SCEE who I needed to order the materials from.
I managed to figure out how to order and to email it off.
Easter being at the end of the week I knew the warehouse woud be shut for days from Thursday.
The materilas need to come from Australia.
Todd had sent some info but I wanted to get in before that arrived.

At dance later C let me know that it's better to have the total under NZ$399 so you don't get stung with tax.
Ooops! Mine is more. Quite a bit more.
She suggested I contact them and ask to split it.
But I wanted all the PACEs I ordered as they are "gap PACEs" and Brains and Locket may get through them quite quickly.
The suggestion is to allow 2-3 weeks to complete a PACE.
Considering that Locket completed two of the old ones in about 2 hrs each. . .
Suffice it to say they may do the initial ones more quickly!
They are at a higher level but I think she'll get through one in a week.
The next order I do will be smaller.
But I think she may get through a couple of years work this year.
We shall see.
We shall also see how Brains does! I just hope he doesn't slack off straight away.

After dance finished we came home and had dinner.
Then I made a list and we went shopping.
Since both Locket and Brains have Coeliac Disease I need to provide all their food for Easter Camp.
We do get a discount on the registration fee which is good.
I wanted to get the food so that thigs were more or less organised for camp.

Brains had said he would cook the meat sauce tomorrow for one of their meals.
And it would do dinner for Wednesday as well.

Wednesday 16 April
Today I spent some time getting things organised.
Made a list of the things Brains and Locket would need to take to camp.
Plus to remember to pack the food from the fridge and freezer.

It was pouring with rain this morning!
Hosing down.

I'd heard from Chuckles and they had started the induction process.
Chuckles was examined and had Prostin gel inserted to try and get things going.
So I knew there wasn't a great rush.
They were going to reassess around 3pm.
Still my gut was telling me to go over there.
I generally listen to my gut.
I've found it's usually a nudging from God!

Pa asked to use the phone at one point.
I heard him asking about hiring a rental car for a week.
He said to me he didn't think we were making the most economical decision regarding the van!
I was like "Say what?" as the kids would say.
It would only cost me round $40 to drive over the hill and back.
A weeks hire would be an awful lot more!

There were a few things I needed to get so picked them up.
Locket came with me to the shops.
Then I dropped Pa off at Johnsonvale so he could visit Ma.
The daily routine. When the weather is good he walks down.
Then I skedaddled over the hill.
After filling my tum with some McD's!
The drive over was fine, the weather was better down at sea level.
I think Pa had been worrying that I'd  have a prang in the van.
When my shoes are wet they have slipped on the pedals a couple of times.
I mentioned it to Boar, in Pa's hearing.
That can be all it takes for Pa to start worrying over something!

I made good time over the hill.
Found Chuckles wanting things to be moving along.
Butcher was there as well.
Halfpint was at a friend of Chuckles' in Featherston.
Bri has a boy around 4 and a wee 3 month old girl.
Chuckles was examined again.
Not that much change and so more Prostin Gel. More waiting.
If labour didn't kick in by itself soon the medical staff wouldn't interfere overnight.
I.e. rupture membranes etc.
After having the gel inserted Chuckles had to stay on the bed for an hr.
She also had to be monitored by CTG to check on bubs heart rate.

Once Chuckles was allowed off the machine we went for a walk.
Would maybe speed things up. Maybe not.
When we were talking earlier Chuckles said that the day before she'd spent a bit of time crying.
I'm not surprised. It's upsetting and scary to think your baby's life is in danger.
I'll never forget how I felt when we nearly lost Smurfette in utero.
I was upset myself driving over the hill when my thoughts turned to "what if?"
I'd asked a couple of friends to pray and was praying myself too.

Butcher went down to Featherston to take some nappies to Bri's place.
Bri had already bathed Halfpint and put him in some outgrown PJs of her son's.
They decided to leave Halfpint there for the night as he was quite happy.
And Bri was happy to have him.

Once Butcher came back the waiting game began again.
Chuckles was uncomfortabe walking too much.
She was also getting tired as she hadn't slept well the night before.

I'd rung my nephew, Kato, and he'd said sure. . .stay the night.
Earlier in the day I'd let Frosty and Jester know I more than likely wouldn't be able to have Mr Magoo as planned.
Talk about feeling torn!
Mind you, I'm sure they know I'd be there for them if the positions were reversed.

Around 9pm Chuckles asked if she could be examined to see if anything was happening.
Not much change.
The midwife suggested Chuckles try and get some sleep.
That Butcher and I went to Kato's.
Chuckles was quite sore and they had said she could have Panadol.
I suggested she did to try and ease the pains so she could sleep.
Then we headed off after I'd left my mobile number with the staff.

Butcher drove us down the road to Kato & Callista's.
A couple of minutes drive is all it takes.
There were lights on.
But Kato had told me he went to bed around 8.30am.
Because he got up at 2am!!
Callista had been out till around 9pm.
They had been going to leave the door unlocked.
But I'd said I was staying at the hospital.
They didn't know Butcher was coming but I knew it would be fine.
It was.
Hated waking them up, but knew we'd be in big trouble, especially with Callista, if we didn't.

I knocked but no response. Then knocked a bit louder.
Heard Jake the dog!
Then Kato came to the door bleary-eyed with sleep.
Callista was asleep.
Kato showed me my bed, in the girls' room.
Was sorting Butcher out when I heard Callista's voice.
We had a big hug.
Haven't seen them since September last year when they went home after she had recovered from surgery for her Aortic Dissection in July.

Butcher went straight to bed.
Callista insisted the pie I'd had wasn't enough and fed me Spaghetti & Meatballs
Yummy, and I was a tad hungry.
Thanks heaps, Callista xxx

We talked for a while.
Then I headed for bed.
Just took off my jeans and climbed in.
Left my socks on though as I didn't want cold feet!
I slept in Hana's bed as she'd climbed into the one I was meant to be sleeping in.
I turned my phone up to it's loudest setting. . .just in case I got a call in the night.

So blessed to have family to go to, though a hotel would have done at a push!

A Whole Seven Weeks! Part Four

Good Friday, 18 April 2014

The next week didn't see too much out of the ordinary hapenning.
Pa had a blood test done. He has usual monthly ones.
He also needed some done before he had a treatment at Hutt Hospital the next week.

I spent time during the week re-making Locket's Barefoot costume.
She was performing her Barefoot in the Rosewood Competition on the Saturday.
I got it all finished by the Friday.

Saturday we headed off early to the competition.
Ariel, who is now teaching for L Dance Studio came with us.
Locket danced well but didn't place.
She is a tough cookie and although disappointed still competes.

On the same day Brains had a Hip Hop competition with Pump Dance
I arranged for K's parents to get Brains out to the comp.
It was also in the Hutt but they didn't have to be there till 11.30am.

Once Locket had finished and we had her report we headed on home.
We dropped Ariel home and then went to see if Miss Lisa was at home.
She was, as was Estelle, so we visited for a while.
Then home for a few hours.
Around 5pm we went back to the Hutt to watch the Hip Hop comp.
We didn't have tickets so I wanted to get there early to ensure we were close to first in the queue.
We were :)
The boys crew danced well and have improved since last year.
Tough competition though.

Thankfully the boys had the next day, Sunday, off from their usual crew practise.

Monday 7 April I met one of the ladies from my Life Group at Cafe Thyme next to Twigland.
Sophia and I got to know each other a bit more.
We're both shy people and prefer one-on-one.
Or small groups where we know the people well.
I enjoyed the time I spent with Sophia.

Tuesday 8 April was Locket's 14th birthday!

You are such a beautiful young girl, growing up so quickly!
Very precious to us all :)
Our usual tradition: Locket got to choose what I made for dinner.
Butter Chicken. . .Yum!

Wednesday morning Pa had his Aclasta Infusion.
This was done at Hutt Hospital.
Quite a quick procedure really.
Around 30 minutes for the drug to go in.
I'd arranged for Locket to be picked up to go to the last photography group.
Wellington Chocolate Factory is where they went this time.
They also took some photos in Cuba Street
I picked Locket up at 2.30.

Thursday saw Brains working. . .sort of!
One of our friends who home-educates has two boys.
Pete had the chance of a work contract.
However before he applied he wanted someone to supervise the boys.
Pete approached Brains about supervising them a few weeks ago.
We hadn't heard anything so thought perhaps he hadn't got the job.
Then Brains got a call.
Which would be the best days for him to supervise the boys?
Brains said Thursday and Friday.
Then we heard Pete had the job.
So this was the first time they came to be supervised.
Jirair and Nicholai brought lots of books with them.
They also spent time creating with Lego, playing computer games, playing Risk and generally just chilling out.
When it was time to go to dance we took them with us and they waited for Pete at the studio.

Friday Jirair and Nicholai were with us again.
We met at the studio once more as Brains and Locket had a practise to go over their solos and the group dances for the Dance Art Competition.
Pete and the boys watched some of the rehearsal.
I mentioned to them that it was free entry and later they came to watch some of the dancing.
They saw Locket dancing but missed Brains who had performed earlier.
Brains hasn't done a solo comp in a few years.
He was entered into this one under duress.
Miss Lisa told him he was doing it.
Brains performed a contemporary piece, and very well too.
He was competing against about 17 others.
Some weren't there that night.
When they announced the placings Brains came First!!
He was suprised, we were pleased and proud.
Ariel came to this comp, as did her mum.
Estelle also came as she wanted to cheer them on.

Locket danced very well. . .but again, no placing :(
She handles it very well although she is disappointed.

Saturday saw us doing a bit of shopping.
Supplies for Locket's "Birthday Function".
Also for the family dinner that was on that evening.
Estelle and Nellie came over and the girls hung out for a while.
Low key, food & chatting.
The last party I do is 13years.
After that they need to organise something if they want it.

I sorted the tops for their Trio the next day.
Also got the chickens roasting. Big ones they were, size 30.
But we were feeding a crowd so needed them.
Everyone was there at some point of the night.
Estelle stayed for the meal and I took her home afterwards.

It was lovely to have everyone here, even if some had gone home and others arrived later.
I'd made some GF Banana Choc Chip muffins and so we used them for the cake.
Usually it is a GF sponge!

Sunday morning we went to church.
Nellie came with us as she usually goes into the city to church.
It made more sense for her to come with us then we could go straight to the comp.

Smurfette came to watch and Boar made it in time to see the girls too.
Also Miss Lisa's mum and a few friends. It was great to have supporters there.

The Trio of Locket, Estelle and Nellie was on first.
Then the Ballet group.
Then the Hip Hop group.
In their different sections.

The Trio placed First.
Their own choreography. A lot of it Locket's.
You should have heard the girls squeal when they heard the result!
First time dancing together in a comp.

The Ballet group placed Second.
Again we were thrilled. Although I think Miss Lisa thinks we should have been placed first!

The Hip Hop group.
Well, to begin with we thought we hadn't placed at all.
It wasn't till we got the report we realised we came Third
Out of 14 groups. First performance.
Again the kids own choreography.

And to top it all off. . .
Brains was given a special award.
Encouragement Award 15+ Years
There wasn't even one listed in the programme!
The only downer was that Brains pulled his left Hamstring when he dropped into a jazz split.
Didn't seem as bad as the right one he pulled.
Here's hoping it isn't.

Still a very sucessful weekend.
We were all very happy with the results.
For Miss Lisa and the studio it is a good start to comps.
For Locket. . .she was buzzing for hours over "My first 1st place!"

Friday 18 April 2014

A Whole Seven Weeks! Part Three

Good Friday, 18 April 2014

Monday 17 March Brains, Locket and I went back to the dentist.
First time Locket has had to have a filling there and she handled it well.
Mine was done first and wasn't as bad as I or the dentist expected.
Brains went next, then Locket.
We all walked out with numb mouths!
Usually on a Monday Locket has been going to home-ed choir.
Today she didn't as she would not have been able to sing very well!

Tuesday 18 saw us visiting the Asthma nurse at Johnsonville Medical Centre
Our local Drs surgery where I've been going since I was pregnant with A-M Prof.
Brains developed asthma a couple of years ago.
Locket has a bit of excercise induced asthma.
They are both doing well and the nurse was impressed with their spacer technique.
The one the kids use is similar to the one in this picture.
They have to press the inhaler then breathe in 6 times. Then the same again.
It is better than using just the inhaler.

The next day, Wednesday, one of my oldest friends came to visit.
A was part of the 5 of us who met on Sunday.
She had organised the get together.
Whenever she comes over from Oz she always visits.
A was my bridesmaid. I did a reading at her wedding.
We always have a good talk when we get together.
No matter if we haven't seen each other in a couple of years.
We just pick up where we left off.
A has been training as a radiologist.
Pretty brave to re-train in your mid-forties!
I got permission for A to watch Brains & Locket's classes.
She has never seen them dance and really enjoyed it.
Afterwards she came back for some dinner and we chatted the night away.
I think she left around midnight :)

Friday 21st March was Halfpint's 2nd birthday.
This is for you Halfpint!

We didn't see Halfpint that day.
We were going to his BBQ birthday party the next day.

During the afternoon we went to visit a friend.
Brains is wanting to get a qualification.
A high school type qualification.
We've looked at various options.
Correspondence School which he could do as an adult student.
Cambridge exams, A.C.E or

In the end we were leaning towards A.C.E.
Before we made a final decision I wanted Brains to find out exactly what was involved.
C has been using A.C.E with her older children since the 1990's.
I thought she would be a good person to tell us about A.C.E.
C's daughter Tif gave Brains a very good explanation of the programme.
They have a Year 13 Certificate that is equivalent to Cambridge A,
NCEA Level 3 and International Baccalaureate.

We needed to affiliate with a provider and C was able to tell us about the one they used.
I'd called and spoken with the Principal of Home Schooling NZ
a few days before.
I'd also started Brains and Locket on the online diagnostic tests.
One reason I was reluctant to use A.C.E. was we had used it way back in the early 1990's.
It has, thankfully, moved with the times in some ways.
Still quite old-fashioned in others.
I found some of the old workbooks or PACEs and showed them to Locket.

That afternoon round 4pm Jester & Frosty dropped off Mr Magoo.
We were looking after him till Sunday afternoon.
He settled well that night.
Next day we headed over the hill to Halfpint's BBQ birthday party.
It was from 11.30am on and we timed leaving with when Mr Magoo was ready for his nap.
We had a great time there and came home round 3pm when Mr Magoo was again in need of sleep.

Nothing of interest happened on the Sunday.
Usually I would go to church and take Mr Magoo with me.
He was pretty tired though so I decided to stay home and let him sleep.
He slept for a couple of hours.
Not long after he woke Frosty arrived to pick him up.
A busy weekend.

Monday 24 March Pa had an appointment with a skin specialist.
He has seen Dr Jennifer Pilgram in the past.
Pa has had a rash for a couple of years.
The doctor who has taken over Wadestown Medical Clinic wanted Pa to see someone who had more knowledge than her and so referred Pa to Dr Pilgram.
When Dr Pilgram examined Pa she thought the most likely condition is Ofuji Disease.
It isn't catching. Pa was prescribed Erythtomycin antibiotics and Betnovate lotion.
Both for 1 month. The antibiotic to be taken twice a day.
The Betnovate lotion to be applied twice a day.
I decided to get some gloves as I didn't want to be absorbing the lotion.
Also if a visiting nurse was applying the cream she/he would wear gloves.

Tuesday Locket finished her diagnostic tests.
She also went to do some work for Jamila, my neice-in-law who had a baby girl recently.
Levi, Jamila's husband, was away for a few days.
Jamila was wanting a bit of help with baby and the 3 older children;
Gideon, Wendi & Hosea. Little Maisy is only a few weeks old.
Although Locket doesn't think she did much Jamila was glad of the help.

Wednesday Locket had the next photography session.
This time they went to Twigland garden centre.
Lots of photos of flowers!
Convienient for us as Locket was helping Jamila again and they live very close to the centre.
I picked Locket up in time to get her to dance class.

Friday Brains finished the last of his diagnostic tests.
He went as far as he could.
He has never had to diagram a sentence though so scored low on the English.
Also not so hot on the Maths.
I knew he wouldn't so it wasn't too much of a shock.

Saturday saw me heading off to pick up Moneypenny's mum, brother and sister-in-law.
They were all going to help do some sorting out.
A-M Prof has been working long hours.
There's always a lot to do when you move into a house.
After dropping them off I went on to an Abbey meeting.
My first one, though I knew most of the people from the Chalet meetings.
J, who was hostess, loaned me some of her books.
The characters, plot and events in the book are discussed.
It's quite interesting, especially when the conversation digresses to other topics!

The one above is the one I'm currently reading.
I'm quite enjoying getting to know a whole new set of characters.

That about wraps up that couple of weeks.
I'll post this now or it will get too long!

A Whole Seven Weeks! Part Two

Good Friday, 18 April 2014

Monday of the next week, 10 April, saw us at the dentist.
I had a tooth that the filling had fallen out of.
Locket and Brains both needed their yearly check-up.
My filling was done as they'd allowed enough time.
After the Xray the dentist found there was a hole in another tooth.
High up, hard to get to. And I have a small mouth :(
Brains and Locket both needed a small filling in one tooth each.
The decay was in a deep fissure, hard to clean with a brush.
So appointments were made to go back.

Wednesday 12 April Locket had the second session of the
photography course she is doing with WHEN
Wellington Home Education Network.
Locket has been enjoying this course and taking some lovely photos.
I'll see if I can get her permission to share some of her photos.
They went to Frank Kitts Park to take photos.

On the Friday I got my hair cut. I hadn't had it cut for over a year.
It had grown quite long.

Before
After

There are quite a few "Wisdom Threads" in my hair now!
Aka "white hairs" :)
It's still long enough to tie back if I need to.
Easier to look after. It was getting too tangled.

Sunday16th March was Moneypenny's birthday.

Happy Birthday to you, Moneypenny!

It was also the day that I got together with some friends from college days.
We all went to Wellington Girls' College
We haven't all been together for around 30 years.
It was a great catch up at Sweet Mother's Kitchen
I hadn't been there before. The others suggested where to go.
It was a good choice and I enjoyed the meal.

Earlier in the day we'd sung In Christ Alone
The lyrics had been running through my head the rest of the day.
The lyrics mean a lot to me.

In Christ Alone

Stuart Townend, Keith Getty

In Christ alone my hope is found,
He is my light, my strength, my song;
this Cornerstone, this solid Ground,
firm through the fiercest drought and storm.
What heights of love, what depths of peace,
when fears are stilled, when strivings cease!
My Comforter, my All in All,
here in the love of Christ I stand.

In Christ alone! who took on flesh
Fulness of God in helpless babe!
This gift of love and righteousness
Scorned by the ones he came to save:
Till on that cross as Jesus died,
The wrath of God was satisfied -
For every sin on Him was laid;
Here in the death of Christ I live.

There in the ground His body lay
Light of the world by darkness slain:
Then bursting forth in glorious Day
Up from the grave he rose again!
And as He stands in victory
Sin's curse has lost its grip on me,
For I am His and He is mine -
Bought with the precious blood of Christ.

No guilt in life, no fear in death,
This is the power of Christ in me;
From life's first cry to final breath.
Jesus commands my destiny.
No power of hell, no scheme of man,
Can ever pluck me from His hand;
Till He returns or calls me home,
Here in the power of Christ I'll stand.

*********

I went to bed with the lyrics still running through my head.
Feeling blessed to meet up with my college friends :)
And to have wonderful family and friends.

A Whole Seven Weeks! Part One

Good Friday, 18 April 2014

Can it really be a whole 7 weeks since I posted in here?
My calendar tells me it is so!
It doesn't feel as though that much time has gone by.
Obviously it has.

So. I've been looking back through my diary.
Lots happened.
Life was busy. . .when is it not? I ask myself.

Last time I posted, 28th Feb, was the first night of the Frame of Mind show
Brains was in this and I really enjoyed it.
Ariel did a great job with the choreography and directing the show.
As well as dancing in it herself.
There were two shows: Friday 28th Feb & Saturday 1st March.
I went to both. Boar, Locket and Smurfette came to the Friday show.
Locket and Smurfette enjoyed it so much they came to the Saturday show too.
We were all very proud of Brains.
Miss Lisa was very proud of him as well.
The other dancers are all 2 - 5 years older than Brains.
And either in dance training school at tertiaty level or have been through one.
Brains is 16 and still a student at a local dance school.
But he kept up and did very well.
Here is a link to the review
It was a great review for a first show.
Brains is the "much shorter counterpart"!

The next week saw us finishing off Pa's old house.
The painting and varnishing.

I'd said to Moneypenny that I was going to scrub the kitchen floor.
My goodness gracious me! I don't think it had had a decent clean for many, many years.

Here is what I did the first night  & next night.

Then I spent most of a day at the house scrubbing. . .well about 4 hrs!
Just a bit to go.

Here are the two products I used.
The red bottle is a bleach gel, and that is what lifted most of the grime.
There was an interesting odour too. . .a bit like over ripe mouldy cheese! as I scrubbed.
The colour difference was pretty amazing.
And there was a PATTERN! Who would have thought.
It is cracked in places, having been down around 40years.
Still serviceable for now though.

Friday 7 March we met with the property manager to get all the paper work signed.
She also needed to take photos.
Saturday 8 March was moving day :)
We got most of the big items moved in.
A-M Prof and Moneypenny thought they may stay at her mums place.
They ended up staying the first night in their new home.
All the neighbours and long time residents of the street are very glad that family are living there.
So are all of us siblings.

Saturday night Butcher and Chuckles stayed along with Halfpint.
We were all attending a wedding the next day.
Butcher was one of the groomsmen.
So Sunday 9 March @ 3pm saw us at the wedding.
A few minutes late and the bride was ON time!!
Not usual for a wedding.
We had a bit of car touble as Butcher's car has issues!
A lovely wedding and Halfpint was a hit as he jived on the dance floor later.
At the grand old age of 23 months!

A busy weekend and I was glad to climb into my bed on Sunday night!
